GOST 32569-2013: Steel Technological Pipelines in Hazardous Industries

GOST 32569-2013 establishes the mandatory engineering, construction, and operational requirements for steel process pipelines transporting explosive, flammable, and toxic fluids. Designed for the petrochemical, refining, and gas industries, this standard handles extreme operating parameters ranging from vacuum conditions to pressures up to 320 MPa, and temperatures between -196°C and +700°C.

This interstate standard was ratified by the Interstate Council for Standardization, Metrology and Certification, with the participation of Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, serving as a vital compliance foundation under the TR CU 032/2013 Technical Regulation for pressure equipment safety.

Gap Analysis: GOST 32569-2013 vs. ASME B31.3 & EN 13480

While GOST 32569-2013 shares operational goals with ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) and EN 13480 (Metallic Industrial Piping), several critical compliance gaps must be addressed:

  • Fluid Classification: GOST categorizes fluids into strictly defined Groups: A (Toxic), B (Explosive/Flammable), and V (Combustible/Non-Combustible). ASME classifies by Fluid Service (Normal, Category M, Category D, High Pressure), requiring precise mapping during localized design adaptations.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): GOST mandates strictly 100% RT or UT for Category I pipelines (e.g., Group A toxic fluids or extreme cold conditions below -70°C). EN 13480 and ASME may allow percentage-based sampling under comparable conditions, which violates GOST safety mandates.
  • Cold Climate Adaptability: GOST enforces stringent Charpy V-notch (KCV) and U-notch (KCU) impact testing at specific negative temperatures (down to -70°C for alloys like 09G2S), accompanied by unique cold-springing and winter start-up protocols unmatched in baseline ASME requirements.

  • Flange Perpendicularity: Deviation from the perpendicular axis of the flange sealing surface to the pipe axis must not exceed 0.15 mm (DN 25-60), 0.25 mm (DN 60-160), 0.35 mm (DN 160-400), and 0.5 mm (DN 400-750).
  • Edge Offset (Welding): Displacement of edges in longitudinal joints must not exceed B = 0.1S, up to a maximum limit of 3.0 mm. Joints with transition thicknesses must maintain a smooth 15° bevel.
  • Straightness Tolerance: Deviation from straightness near a joint (measured with a 400 mm ruler) must not exceed 1.5 mm for Category I and PN > 100 pipelines, and 2.5 mm for Categories II-V.
  • Drainage Requirements: Nozzles for drainage are strictly governed by pipe size. For pipelines DN 200 to 250, the required drain fitting diameter is 50 mm.
  • Volumetric Testing (RT/UT): 100% Radiographic Testing (RT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is mandatory for all pipelines operating at PN > 10 MPa, Category I pipelines, and systems handling Group A(a) substances or operating below -70°C.
  • Surface Defect Detection: Capillary (PT) or Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is mandatory after visual inspection for Category I and extreme cold applications. No undercutting is permitted on PN > 100 or Category I pipelines.
  • Spectroscopic Analysis (PMI): 100% Positive Material Identification (PMI) is mandatory for the weld seams of alloy steel pipelines operating above 10 MPa or within Category I.
  • Pressure Testing: Proof pressure for hydraulic testing is calculated as 1.25 * P * ([σ]20 / [σ]t). Pneumatic testing is permitted under specific conditions but strictly requires real-time Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring.
